How to Help Morning Sickness

Morning sickness is just one of those things most mothers will experience. Four out of five pregnant women can expect to have some kind of morning sickness throughout their pregnancy. There are many different reasons it happens, with hormonal changes being the biggest factor. Your body and hormones change so quickly in the first trimester. Morning sickness doesn’t just happen in the morning — it can be present all day! So what can you do about it?

While there are lots of different ways to help morning sickness, here are a few that I have found and loved:

Eat right when you wake up. As soon as your eyes open, eat a snack! Keep it by the bed so you don’t have to get up. The best snacks to have first thing include:

  • Rice cakes

  • Graham crackers

  • Saltines

  • Pretzels

  • Drink clear soda such as ginger ale and sprite

Ginger is one of the most common foods that can help relieve morning sickness as it helps to soothe your unhappy tummy. You can use ginger in many ways, including:

  • Gingerbread

  • Ginger snaps

  • Ginger tea

  • Ginger salad dressing (think hibachi — yum!)

  • Ginger tummy drops

One of my favorite things to make for morning sickness is smoothies. Smoothies can include so many different things. You can add vegetables to help with nutrition or just do fruit! Here are my favorite smoothie combos (it works best when the fruit is frozen first):

  • Oats, banana, ginger, strawberries, greek yogurt and milk

  • Blueberries, oats, honey, greek vanilla yogurt and milk

  • Frozen spinach, strawberries, banana, one scoop of peanut butter, greek yogurt and milk

  • Any combo of frozen fruit with orange or apple juice works well too if you want more of a tropical smoothie.

There are many ways to help with morning sickness and these are just the ones that I have loved in the past. If your sickness gets worse with no sign of letting up soon, talk to your doctor or midwife about other options. They can recommend different vitamins or even prescribe nausea medication!

As always congratulations on the new little one and I hope you find some nausea relief soon!
